Indian Head Massage has developed over a thousand years from traditional techniques practised in India. The practise of Indian Head Massage was a central tradition within daily family life in India. The origins of this type of massage date back to the beginnings of Hinduism and is known as 'champissage' in India forming part of the system of Ayurveda - the science of life - an ancient form of medical treatment which is nearly 4000 years old.

Ayurveda is a method of relieving pain and healing through the balance of the body.

The Ayurveda, a sacred Hindu text, was written around 1800 BC. In Ayurveda, life consists of body, mind and spirit and each person is different. Massage is included among its principles of achieving balance of the body. By restoring balance and harmony of the body, mind and spirit the health and wellbeing of the individual improves.

What to expect

We offer 30 minute or 45 minute Indian Head Massage treatments, though upon request this time frame can be altered.

Indian Head Massage can be performed whilst the client is dressed and sitting in a chair enabling the treatment to be given in to those who are not comfortable being undressed or laying on a couch.  We begin the massage by applying pressure to points in the upper back, arms and shoulders in the muscles and iron out any knots, before moving on to the neck and head to release tension that can spur on headaches. During Indian head massage, oils will be applied to the client's scalp.
