Acne Scarring

Unfortunately, often after overcoming active acne many people are left with permanent scarring and marks. These scars are caused by inflammation within the dermal layer of skin and are estimated to affect 95% of people with acne. However, we provide a range of advanced treatments to visibly improve the appearance of acne scarring and skin tone.

During an initial consultation we will assess an appropriate strategy to treat your acne scarring by utilising a range of treatments and products.

Please take into account that suitable acne scar treatment is dependent upon the extent of your scarring, the desired results, and your skin type.

What are acne scars?

Inflammation caused by acne can leave the skin feeling bumpy and discoloured for a very long time.

There are three main types of acne scars:

Atrophic acne scars are most common and occur when the scarring has lost collagen from the healing response, approximately 75% of all acne scars are atrophic. They may be further classified as ice-pick scars, boxcar scars, and rolling scars.

Ice Pick Scars

Ice Pick Scars are small, narrow, deep scars that extend into the dermis and appear like the skin has been punctured with a sharp object.

Boxcar Scars

Boxcar Scars are round or ovoid indented scars with sharp borders and vary in size, they resemble chicken pox scars.

Rolling Scars

Rolling scars are wider than icepick and boxcar scars, caused by scar tissue formation underneath the skin that have an uneven wave-like pattern of depth in the skin.

Why does acne scarring occur ?

Acne scarring is caused by inflammation during the skin’s healing process, during which time abnormal textures, pigments and tones can appear on your skin.

Acne scars occur when normal tissue in the skin is destroyed and replaced with fibrous tissue. When acne is severe it can act like a wound, so when the body heals the damage, it can produce too much or too little collagen to repair the area. The production of too much collagen forms a keloid or a hypertrophic scar. Too little collagen leads to a depression in the skin, or an atrophic scar.

The deeper and more inflamed the acne lesion the more likely it is to scar.

Acne scarring can occur naturally, or in many cases patients can exacerbate their scarring by picking or squeezing their spots. Scarring can affect the back or the chest, as well as the face. If you are suffering from live acne, you need to wait until your acne is under control before seeking acne scar treatment.

What are the results of acne scar treatment ?

We offer treatment for acne scarring that will result in visibly reduced scarring and markings, although, the full extent of results is dependent upon the type and severity of acne scarring. Typically, results will be permanent, however if a client suffers from further acne following acne scarring treatment there is a risk that new scars will form, and future tretment will hence be required.

Our Acne Scarring Treatments

Micro-dermabrasion is a non-invasive, non-surgical method of a mechanical exfoliation and skin rejuvenation that creates immediate and visible results to remove blemishes, unclog pores and to remove dead skin cells. This treatment inspires an even skin tone and clear complexion.

Dermaroller otherwise known as micro needling, is a type of skin rejuvenation treatment that produces shallow punctures in the skin.

The tiny punctures made stimulate a healing response within the skin, thus increasing cellular renewal and collagen and elastin production. This helps to rejuvenate the appearance of the skin, plumping out fine lines and wrinkles and improving the appearance of marks, acne scars and stretchmarks.  The skin is encouraged to shed damaged skin cells on the surface and replace them with fresh, new, healthy cells, leaving a radiant complexion.

A tailor made facial treatment plan customised to your skin. We will use a range of treatments and products to cleanse the skin and improve the appearnce of acne scars that will leave you with a rejuvenated, clear skin tone.

Though single treatments are available, we highly recommend a course in order to obtain the finest results.

Chemical skin peels penetrate the skin to target pigmentation, acne scars and abnormal textures. Skin peels employ active ingredients to help calm inflammation, control bacteria and clear surface oil, leaving you with clear blemish free skin.

The usual downtime is about a week, during which time you will experience the skin peeling away to reveal new, smoother skin below the surface.
